Dr. Bains Expresses Disappointment in Governor's Veto of AB 1348

For immediate release:

(Sacramento, CA) October 13, 2025 – Dr. Jasmeet Bains (D-Delano) released the following statement regarding Governor Gavin Newsom's veto of AB 1348, legislation that would have protected school funding when immigration raids create mass student absences.

“President Trump is using ICE to defund California schools. After his raids earlier this year, Valley schools experienced a 22 percent increase in daily student absences. By vetoing this bill, the Governor has decided to keep the savings created when parents are too afraid to send their kids to school. Our kids deserve better.

“AB 1348 was a straightforward commonsense solution. We already protect school funding from natural disasters and public health emergencies. Why would we not protect school funding from Trump? My bill would have ensured that schools don't face financial penalties for circumstances completely beyond their control.

"While I am disappointed in this outcome, I remain committed to fighting for our students and our schools. This issue will not go away, and neither will my determination to find solutions."
