Dr. Bains Encourages Emergency Readiness in New Trilingual Public Service Announcement

For immediate release:

(Bakersfield, CA) April 24, 2025 – Dr. Jasmeet Bains (D-Delano) released a public service announcement on emergency and disaster preparedness this week in English, Spanish, and Punjabi.

“I wanted to share this PSA with my community because being prepared is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself and your loved ones in the event of a disaster,” said Dr. Bains.

A campaign encouraging disaster and emergency readiness is timely.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) tracked Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster declarations in 2024 and found that a major disaster was declared every four days.

“In 2024, 267 out of 366 days had at least one active major disaster incident. This means that for almost three quarters (73%) of the year, there was an active disaster being dealt with somewhere in the US,” writes the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), which compiled the data for the UNDRR.

FEMA's own survey, the 2023 National Preparedness Report, showed that only 45% of Americans have prepared for a potential disaster.

Dr. Bains volunteers as the Chief Medical Officer for the Central Valley with the California Medical Assistance Team (CAL-MAT) and is routinely deployed to provide medical care to first responders and evacuees in disaster situations. She is also regularly involved in emergency planning and preparedness coordination with California’s Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA) and CAL-MAT.

The PSA will be posted on Dr. Bains’ official social media accounts. The posts will also link to California’s disaster readiness information website: https://www.listoscalifornia.org/.

“I hope people take the message to heart and share it with their friends and family; waiting until after a disaster is too late. Doing small things today can ensure you, your family, friends, neighbors, and loved ones are safe and cared for when disaster strikes,” said Dr. Bains.
