June Update from Dr. Bains' Office
Stop Laying Off Firefighters Act Included in State Budget
Earlier in June, the State Legislature approved my proposal to staff CAL FIRE year-round as part of the 2025-26 State Budget.
Laying off thousands of firefighters annually is irresponsible and dangerous – we saw one of the most destructive fires in state history rip through L.A. in January, weeks after we kicked 3,000 highly trained and qualified firefighters off payroll.
The change will bring CAL FIRE’s staffing levels up to 9,000 year-round firefighters.
Juneteenth Celebration
I had the honor of presenting an Assembly Resolution to honor Juneteenth at the Bakersfield Juneteenth Independence Day Celebration.
Juneteenth in California is a day of observance, and we use this Resolution to urge all Californians to celebrate, honor, and reflect on the significant roles that African Americans have played in the history of the United States, emphasizing education and achievement.
Thank you to all of the Kern County groups who helped make Juneteenth 2025 memorable and meaningful.
Doctor's Note - Firework Safety
Fireworks can be a ton of fun, but they can do real damage. As your local doc, here’s the deal: fireworks send too many people to the hospital for avoidable injuries. I encourage everyone to celebrate the Fourth of July, and to do so safely!
Leave the big show to the professionals; report illegal fireworks here
