January Update from Dr. Bains' Office

Dear Neighbors,

This year is off to a strong start.

Last week at the State of the County, I announced my effort to bring a University of California medical school to the South Valley. There are simply not enough ways to help recruit medical professionals to our area. Building a medical campus will bring jobs, it will create new opportunities to grow our own here in Kern, and most importantly it will be an asset to our community health. My office will continue to provide updates as we push forward to get this done.

In early January, I spoke out strongly against a proposal that would ban youth football. Here is what I said at the time,

“Banning youth football is not a solution. Our youth need organized sports and the developmental opportunities that youth sports provide. Let’s work on implementing the safety protocols already in place and hold those accountable that are not doing their part.”

Creating and protecting opportunities for youth is a critical part of what I aim to do as your representative and I will fight legislation that tries to take those opportunities away.

I also want to shout out Arvin High School and congratulate them on their 75th anniversary. What a wonderful accomplishment.

Doctor's Note

Starting this year, I am adding a new component to my monthly updates. I’m calling this new part of my newsletter, ‘Doctor’s Note’ and I will use this space to highlight important medical and health care information.

This month, I am highlighting an article I wrote for the Bakersfield Californian on how Kern County is implementing California’s Master Plan on Aging and setting a great example on long-term care for aging and older adults. You can read more about those efforts here.
